Peer Specialists

Job Bank (PA only)

Peer Specialist Certification Training

When: July 19-23, 2010 and August 2-6, 2010

Hosted by Behavioral Health Services of Somerset and Bedford Counties, Inc. (BHSSBC)

A Certified Peer Specialist is a paid staff person with a mental health or co-occurring disorder who has been trained and certified to help his/her peers through respect, shared responsibility, and a mutual agreement of what is helpful. 
 
Qualifications of Certified Peer Specialists:

  • Being able to understand another’s situation empathically based on mutual experience
  • Have a High School Diploma or General Equivalency Degree (GED)
  • The completion of at least twelve (12) months of paid work or volunteer activity or obtained at least 24 credit hours of post secondary education
  • Being committed to actively participating in training and meeting all attendance and course requirements

BHSSBC is hosting a two week training July 19-23, 2010 and August 2-6, 2010 at the Quality Inn in Somerset, conducted by MHASP’s program the Institute for Recovery and Community Integration. Candidates who complete the program may become a Certified Peer Specialist and work in the field of Mental Health.
